Why We Believe Baby Monitoring Should Be Backed by Science

At Goldilocks, we’ve always believed that parents deserve more than clever technology and beautiful design. They deserve products built on evidence, tested rigorously, and continuously improved through research.

That’s why we’re incredibly proud to announce the publication of our latest peer-reviewed research evaluating Goldilocks technology in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health.

But for us, publishing research isn’t the finish line—it’s part of how we build better technology.

 

Building Evidence, Not Just Products

The baby monitoring market has grown rapidly over the past decade. Yet surprisingly, there remains very little independent clinical evidence evaluating the performance of wearable home-monitoring devices.

In fact, one of the key conclusions of the published research is that there is still a significant need for rigorous scientific evaluation across the entire industry.

We believe that’s something worth changing.

Rather than asking parents to simply trust our claims, we’re committed to contributing to the evidence that helps families, clinicians and researchers better understand how wearable monitoring technology performs.

 

What Did the Study Evaluate?

The published study evaluated Goldilocks Version 2.0, an earlier generation of our wearable monitoring technology.

Using a neonatal simulation mannequin, researchers assessed how accurately the device detected breathing and simulated apnoea under controlled conditions.

The study found:

  • Goldilocks correctly detected breathing in 100% of trials under the optimal simulated breathing conditions.
  • Simulated apnoea was correctly identified in 94% of cases at those settings.
  • The research also demonstrated that detection accuracy varied depending on the magnitude of chest movement, identifying opportunities for further improvement.

Perhaps most importantly, the research established one of the first evidence bases for evaluating accelerometer-based wearable monitoring in newborns.

Like all good research, the study identified both strengths and limitations, providing valuable insights that have helped shape the next generation of Goldilocks technology.

One of the realities of medical technology is that by the time research is published, the technology has often evolved significantly.

The device evaluated in this study was Goldilocks Version 2.0, developed before our transition to an AI-enabled platform.

Today, Goldilocks has progressed to Version 5.0, incorporating years of additional engineering, improved algorithms, enhanced signal processing and artificial intelligence to deliver even more meaningful insights for families.

Every version has built upon the lessons learned from the one before it.

Research doesn’t slow innovation—it accelerates it.
